sustainability project: at-home personal beekeeping system with harvesting service
The Problem
Why?
The importance of nurturing our bees.
Traditional beekeeping requires space and access to expensive equipment.

The Vision
Concept Research: Bottle to Bottle Honey Production
researching the ways individuals have successfully broke the boundaries of traditional beekeeping
Ideation
integrating the aesthetic from the inspiration to arrive at a concept that is both functional and is suitable for a typical backyard environment
Solution
Aesthetic and Interaction Inspiration
of food Americans eat is directly or indirectly derived from honeybee pollination.
-inhabitat.com
of global food crops depend on pollination.
Honeybees are indispensable for sustaining food production.
Bee populations are under threat and traditional beekeeping isn’t always easy and accessible.
People want to help but don’t know how.
To develop a user-friendly, at home beekeeping system paired with a professional harvesting service:
making beekeeping accessible and hassle-free for individuals while supporting ecosystems and the bee population.
Before we get into designing…
What are the necessary components for a bee hive system and what do they do?
a stackable hive system with:
a clear main body for visibility without disturbing the colony
bamboo at the attachment points for a more eco-friendly alternative to wood
Branding Exploration
Attach top lid to the base of the brood box with the frames in place.
Place the queen excluder attachment onto the top of the brood box. This will prevent the queen from laying eggs in the honey super.
Tie the rope around eye hooks and hang the unit at least 18 inches off the ground.
Re-hang your hive at least 18” off the ground and wait for the bees to occupy the honey super and begin producing honey! This will take weeks to months depending on the health of the hive.

How can we create an at-home system for raising and caring for bees, like we do with plants?
Being fully involved in the process!
hexagonal/organic shape to fit in with the aesthetic and play with honeycomb shape
Top Covers: venilation and protection
Honey Super: honey storage
Queen Excluder: frame to stop queen
Frame: foundation for beeswax
Brood Box: where the queen, bees, and all eggs live
Bottom Board: hive entrance
Hive Stand: elevates hive from the ground
How can we rework this concept into a more accessible system for more people?
Screw in eye hooks into the lid of the brood box.
Wait for the bees to come and do their work! They will begin occupying the brood box and creating the comb. This will take several days.
Unscrew eye hooks from brood box and screw them into the honey super in the same place.
Check if honey super is full. This is when most frames are about 80% capped with wax on their combs.
Jars of harvested honey from your home returned and ready to use!
Discover the fulfillment of the beekeeping experience as you nurture your own hive and support a healthier planet.
inspired by the natural, charming outdoor experience in your backyard and feeling one with nature
similar to the idea of having your own mini veggie garden, but having a mini beekeeping experience in your backyard that actually yields results
testing different hive layout methods:
Which is most suitable for the process?
clear sides to allow visibility when caring for the bees
arranged frame layout for easy accessibility
Bee space: a measurement of 2/3 of an inch that allows bees to move freely between hive components without “glueing” them together
treated bamboo
protected from decay, insects, and fungi
stable
rapidly renewable resource
ecofriendly alternative to wood
greencast acrylic
produced with 100% recycled raw materials
easy to process
8-10x more impact resistance than glass

Set up and care
Treat frames with lemon grass oil by putting a few drops onto the top of the hive frames to attract the bees. Then put them into place in the brood box.
Acquire the top feeder attachment. Fill the jar with a ratio of 1:1 sugar and water and allow to dissolve. Screw back onto the attachment and add to the top of the brood box.
The honey super
Is your bee colony populated and frames in the brood box are about 80% full? If so, your hive needs more space to store honey!
Attach the honey super which will be stacked on top of the brood box unit.
Bees established and frames capped with wax? Get the honey from your very own hive harvested and sent back to you!
Follow instructions for packaging and sending us your honeycomb.
